Roger Mayweather, former boxing champion-turned trainer, has filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, attempting to claim exclusive rights to the nickname ‘Black Mamba’. He wants to be known as Roger “Black Mamba” Mayweather.
The nick name grew on Mayweather after watching a nature show about reptiles years ago. He want to use the trademark “Black Mamba” for branding purposes in connection with his boxing business, which includes personal training and coaching.
Bryant started using the “Black Mamba” ‘alias’ during the Los Angeles Lakers’ championship years in 2009-2010. Bryant says “Black Mamba” has become his alter ego, which he uses as an intimidation tactic. His sponsor Nike even did a commercial introducing Bryant as the “Black Mamba”.
What Bryant forgot, however, it to trademark the name. With boxer Mayweather closing in on a trademark registration, this may lead to Bryant having to seek a new alter ego.
