Brandzilla

godzilla - brandzillaGodzilla is aiming his breath of fire at a new trademark application for BRANDZILLA, a trademark for a jewellery company.

Toho Co., Ltd., the company behind Godzilla  (in Japan known as Gojira: “go-gee-rah”), has been merchandising the iconic movie monster for almost 60 years now. One way to keep a steady flow of income, is to prevent any other (god)zilla’s to enter the trademark realm. Over the years they have fought a beer company and French metal band over the name Godzilla for instance. And now it is the jewellery company’s turn.

Toho claims that BRANDZILLA, the logo and name of a Texas based jewelry company, should have its trademark registration application rejected by the Trademark Office because it is confusing similar to Toho’s GODZILLA mark. Furthermore, Toho states that the BRANDZILLA logo is deliberately trying to trade off the goodwill associated with Godzilla.

Godzilla took out Tokyo a lot quicker that the usual opposition procedure lasts, but we’ll see who will be victorious in this one. Our money is on the fire-breathing giant lizard.
