The Russian trademarks office, with the beautiful name Rospatent, has refused the application for the mark “Vyp (Buhalo)” on absolute grounds. This because this trademark would be slang for “heavy drinking”. The registration of this mark is therefore contrary to public interest. Remarkable, as in the eyes of foreigners like us, Russians drink vodka like water. And we would too when temperatures would drop to minus 10 for months!
The proprietor of the mark does not share the opinion. In his view Buhalo is a wading bird. Rospatent already has indicated that nowadays, Buhalo is not a very known name for a wading bird (contrary to the other meaning).
In the past, the trademark “belochka prishla ya” once has been refused by Rospatent. This trademark means delirium tremens. The refusal had an opposite effect as the refusal got huge media attention and the trademark became very popular.
