China and the protection of intellectual property; it has not proven to be the best combination in recent years. Piracy and poor enforcement of rules have been seldom an exception. But, as the Chinese are now saying, things are improving.
China is working on amendments to its intellectual property laws of November 1, 2019, there will be tougher penalties for the illegal use of trademarks. Violators can be sentenced to compensate up to five times the damage suffered. Now it is up to three times that amount.
Although e-commerce giants such as Alibaba have stated that they are improving their behaviour, counterfeit products are still widely available through social media channels.
It remains to be seen if, after November 1, things will get better in China.
