A new series of playfully packaged condoms has caused outrage in the Evangelical Church in Germany. The condoms contained a text attributed to Luther, “Hie stehe ich, ich kann nicht anders” (“Here I stay, I cannot help it”).
The Evangelical Church was relieved that thousands of condoms have now been destroyed. According to the church, the condoms caused damage to the image of the Protestant church in Germany.
However, the Luther-condom was produced with the best intentions. Young Protestants in the region around Dusseldorf hoped the playful packaged contraceptive would attract the attention of peers who are at a distance from the church. Therefore, the condom also mentioned the phrase “for prostitutes and saints”, but also a reference to a website. On that site the visitor was confronted with questions of faith and the actual context of the words attributed to Luther.
The church leadership does not deny that the stunt was well intentioned. Unfortunately, according to its spokesman: “Well meant is not necessarily well executed.”
