Starbucks Corporation filed a law suit against Obsidian Group Inc., a rival coffee chain, for alleged infringement of its ‘Frappuccino’ trademark.
According to Starbucks, Obsidian has been selling blended frozen beverages at its Coffee Culture Cafés under the name ‘Freddoccino’. The coffee chain giant states this is diluting the distinctive character of its famous Frappuccino trademark, and is likely to confuse consumers into believing that two products are affiliated or that ‘Freddoccino’ is endorsed or approved by Starbucks.
Starbucks owns numerous trademark registrations for the name Frappuccino. In the past year US Starbucks stores alone had more than $1.5 billion in sales of Frappuccino beverages.
Obsidian’s Freddoccino beverages come in a variety of flavors and are available with whipped cream and flavored syrup toppings. Just like the Starbucks coffee drink.
Starbucks’ pockets are deep, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out. We’ll just have a coffee, sit back, relax and see what is going to happen.
