The world has a new Pope: Francis. Full name with the title is Franciscus Pontifex Maximus.
Does this mean a run on Francis trademarks? Choosing a mark that has a holy flavor is a good start, isn’t?
Well, the registers show some applications and registrations of Francis and Franciscus but none seem to relate to the new Pope.
Would the Holy See be able to block these kind of marks? In the past, the Holy See has registered their symbols, not as trademark (as incorrectly stated in this Forbes article) but as official emblems under 6ter Paris Convention. So, trademark offices will refuse automatically any similar looking emblem. The new emblem of Francis is probably underway.
There was a story in the last weeks that a rapper calls himself Pope Emeritus and this led to the urban legend story that he wanted to sue the new Pope.
