The Prince Estate, has run into a fight with music streaming service Tidal. Tidal, owned by Beyonce’s husband and rapper Jay-Z, launched nearly two years ago, claiming exclusive releases and artist-friendlyness. Tidal would be a shining example of how a streaming music platform could be built that would be successful while being fair to the musical artists whose work it streamed. Now, Tidal’s second unique selling point is under fire: the estate of Prince is suing Tidal for copyright infringement, claiming that Tidal is streaming large portions of Prince’s catalog without authorization. In addition, the estate is claiming that an advance owed to Prince by Tidal was never paid, either. As always, this is not about infringement. It’s about money.
