With bated breath everyone in the UK will await the outcome of the Scottish referendum. Will Scotland vote for its independence? Will Scotland no longer be a part of the United Kingdom?
For most trademark owners a Scottish independence will not change many things. Scotland will probably remain member of the European Union and European trademark holders retain their protection in Scotland. Holders of national trademarks in the UK might face some changes: they will probably need to convert the Scotland part of their UK mark into a national trademark registration in Scotland. More work and more costs.
There is also an other issue: the domainname extension. As the co.uk extension will no longer be applicable, companies need a different extension. However, the most logical extension, .sc. is already in use by the Seychelles. Fortunately for the Scots .scot will soon be available as an extension.
