Is Fortnite a copy?

Is Fortnite a copy? The online game Fortnite is a massive hit, but is now facing copyright infringement charges.

Developed by Epic Games, Fortnite is a 2017 cooperative shooter-survival video game. One of the game modes features a free-to-play battle royale game, where up to 100 players fight in increasingly-smaller spaces to be the last person standing. The title’s debut on iOS alone generated $100 million in revenue in just three months. Reports say that the blockbuster has hit over $1 billion in sales across all platforms. But success has many fathers.

Korean based PUBG Corp. filed a lawsuit against Epic Games (US) with the aim of getting the courts to decide if Fortnite represents some kind of copy of PUBG. The Korean studio said PUBG is the “first standalone Battle Royale survival shooter game.” The company claims to have “concerns” about Fortnite’s user interface, gameplay, and “structural replication” as it relates to the similarities between the gameplay and systems in both PUBG and Fortnite.

PUBG Corp.’s lawsuit against Epic is currently limited to Korea, but with the game being popular worldwide, there is a change of the copyright infringement case expanding to other countries as well.
