After the terrible events in Paris last week, first there was horror. Followed by the awareness that the terrorist attack was an attack on the freedom of speech. With the slogan “Je suis Charlie” millions expressed their condolences, this sentence was the slogan of the freedom of speech.
Unfortunately there are always people that want to get some profit out of historic events like these. For example “Je suis Charlie” t-shirts are for sale. And now someone even filed the trademark “Je Suis Charlie” in the Benelux for many products such as magazines, clothing and even beer.
Certainly inappropriate. Moreover, it is unsure whether the Benelux Trademarks Office will accept this slogan as it probably will see the slogan as an endorsement and not as a trademark. The trademark Allah faced the same problem and was rejected. Allah will not be seen as a trademark, according to the Benelux Trademarks Office.
Well, for us the slogan “Je suis Charlie” remains the slogan of the freedom of speech that will always triumph no matter what!
Update: meanwhile, the applicant has withdrawn the trademark.
