Jonathan Paul Manziel is an American football quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies. Manziel was given the nickname “Johnny Football” by fans and students at Texas A&M before the start of the 2012 season. The nickname is a registered trademark. Although protected, it now seems that Manziel can’t capitalize on his name.
The corporation Manziel set up, cannot capitalize off the quarterback until his NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) eligibility has expired. Or when he leaves to go into the NFL (National Football League) draft. He can take action to further its claim of ownership of “Johnny Football” though.
Although Manziel Us trademark application has not been accepted yet, common law trademark rights apply until the formal registration process is complete.
Maybe the owner of the “Keep Calm” expression will join the suit (more here)
