Trademark applications #metoo

Fans of House of Cards are not fans of Kevin Spacey anymore. It’s likely that the sixth and last season will not be aired, due to the sexual harassment claims that have been raised against Spacey.

We have noted before: society’s issues are often reflected in the trademark register. We have seen trademark applications for the word Brexit, Covfefe, the word ‘knee’ and now its #METOO.

“Me too” or “#MeToo” spread virally as a two-word hashtag used on social media in October 2017 to denounce sexual assault and harassment, in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein.

Now, in the midst of the whole discussion, we are seeing trademark applications for #metoo popping up everywhere. Trademarks that cover clothing, jewellery, but also cosmetics and fragrances.

When the world is on fire, trademark applications are never far behind.
