A Louis Vuitton handbag for few dollars is obviously a fake copy. You can often recognize this fake items from a distance.
But the pirates are now producing better knockoff copies than ever. Sometimes, the imitation is so well made that it is very difficult to distinguish it from the real ones. A difficult situation for retailers who just want sell the real stuff.
Retailers now get help from the company NEC. NEC has developed software which can examine products. You only need a special lens and a smart phone. The program detects and investigates the patterns and can tell us whether a product is genuine or not. Each pattern has a unique composition and also from zippers and buttons much information can be traced.
Obviously this is not a consumer product, but it sounds promising in the fight against counterfeit!
