Rihanna may be a superhero to her fans, but according to trademark law, she is not. A recent application to trademark her birth name, Robyn, has caused DC Comics, the creators of the original superhero franchise, to oppose. The reason: Batman’s loyal helper: Robin “The Boy Wonder”.
The famous singer filed a trademark in 2014 with the goal to create an online magazine bearing her own name. DC Comics has been the owner of a trademark for “Robin” for several decades, and now believe that the similarity between the names will cause confusion.
In order to win the trademark dispute, DC Comics will have to convince the court not only that consumers will be confused, thinking Robyn (the online magazine) is somehow related to Robin. But also, that Rihanna could in some way benefit from the confusion.
It could be quite a stretch though thinking that the world famous singer will benefit from the superhero sidekick.
