A lot of business identifiers can be a trademark. As long as it can identify the origin. We wrote earlier about the layout of an Apple Store being a trademark. Now we can add ‘roof’ to the saga of odd trademarks.
Pizza Hut has successfully registered their very distinctly shaped red roof as a trademark.
It goes to show: as long as a sign can identify your business, it can be trademarks (in principle). It gives trademarks owners a powerful weapon in the battle of staying recognizable and exclusive.
So this means, no red roofs for other restaurant businesses. At least, identical or similar roofs.
Hmmm… how about the Red Roof Inn then…?
