Apple is working on an iWatch, rumours have it. But can they name their new ‘wearable’ iWatch? That remains to be seen.
Reportedly, watch company Swatch – that also owns the brands Omega, Breguet, Tissot and Longines – is planning to block any attempts by Apple to trademark the ‘iWatch’ name, as it is too similar to one of their own products: iSwatch.
Swatch has registered the iSwatch trademark in several dozen countries and is eager to protect it, according to CEO Nick Hayek. “This is the normal procedure to protect your own brand name. We react like this for all other brand names that we have protected.”, Hayek said.
We are curious as to see what happens. Will Swatch really battle Apple in courts all over the world, or will Apple just pay Swatch off for consent to using the name iWatch, which the have done in the past with other iPad and iPhone trademarks.
