Taylor Swift has a lot of official merchandise. But there is also loads of unofficial merchandise. That’s why Swift has invested in protecting her intellectual property. Besides her name, of course, she trademarked different album titles and her autograph. Her latest ‘hit’: song lyrics.
Swift obtained trademark registrations for the phrases “Cause We Never Go Out Of Style”, a lyric from her third single “Style”, and “Nice To Meet You. Where You Been?”, the starting lyric of “Blank Space”.
It is very uncommon for lyrics to be protected through trademark law. Of course there is always copyright: all original lyrics are copyrighted, but it is debatable whether this is also the case for mere phrases, especially when they’re quite common, like “Nice To Meet You. Where You Been?”. On the other hand, Swift has a registration, so t-shirt printers worldwide: beware!
