The name Monsanto disappears. The seed breeder merges with its parent company, chemical concern Bayer. The merger will put to rest one of the most controversial company names in the world, although the company itself will remain.
Bayer bought the American company Monsanto in 2016, creating the largest seed and chemical company in the world.
The Monsanto name is notorious, mainly due to one of Monsanto’s most lucrative products: weed control product Roundup. Although useful as a product, many environmental organizations are critical about the effect of Roundup on nature and our food.
Furthermore, Monsanto was also the company that produced the defoliation agent called ‘Agent Orange’ that was used during the Vietnam War, which led to various forms of cancer.
