The end of Viagra

Midsummernight 2013: on 21 June at 00.00 hours the patent on Viagra® lapsed. So what  now?

It is expected that by this week the first generic versions of Viagra® will be available on prescription in pharmacies. Not under the name Viagra® of course, this is a registered trademark, but under the name sildenafil, the active ingredient of Viagra®.

Viagra® came on the market in 1998, and was an immediate success. But with success come many copycats. Viagra® has suffered from massive quantities of ‘fake pills’. MarkMatters.com believes Viagra® is the reason we have received so much spam over the last couple of years.

With the arrival of generic versions of Viagra® it is likely prices will drop, which is important, as the medicine is not covered by health insurances. Furthermore, the generic tablets will not come in the distinct Viagra® blue colour and shape. These are also registered trademarks.

Viagra® has a good and long run. It will be hard keeping it up.
