To sangría, or not to sangría

sangriaVery little beats it: tapas in the Spanish sun, along with a carafe of ice cold sangría. And now sangría’s “status” as a Spanish delicacy has been acknowledged: sangría can only be called sangría, when it is made in Spain.

The European Parliament passed legislation for the protection of geographical indications for aromatized drinks, including sangría. A drink can now only be sold as ‘sangría’ if it is produced on the Iberian peninsula.

Of course it cannot be prevented that sangría is being produced in other countries. Howevet, in such a case it may only be called an “aromatized wine-based drink”. Or anything else, as long as it is not ‘sangría’.
