Toy giant Lego is taking legal action against a high-flying New Zealand company claiming some of its toy designs are too similar.
Zuru Toys, the counterparty, however, is standing their ground stating that Lego can’t claim a monopoly on plastic brick toys and figurines.
It remains to be seen if Lego will prevail. The Scandinavian company had a patent on the bricks for 20 years, but the patent has expired, leaving no protection for the building blocks any longer.
Zuru Toys founders are reportedly worth several billion dollars and remain unaffected by Lego’s claims of product infringement.
