Defensive trademark registrations of parts of your mark? Facebook does not need them as Facebook has no problem at all to defend its brand. Two recent oppositions were won gloriously.
Remarkably, both oppositions concerned another wordelement in Facebook. In the first opposition Facebook objected to FaceBusks. The OHIM ruled that the two marks were visually and phonetically similar. The opposition was upheld.
Opposition number two concerned the “book”part: Facebook objected to LoveBook. Also in this opposition the OHIM takes the view that the trademarks are visually and aurally similar. There is even a conceptual similarity.
Well, that’s in your Face!
